There is a certain pressure upon each human in this world that we must grow up to be led into the workforce, where we become part of the machine. Some of us may be lucky enough to reach retirement and enjoy the final 10 to 20 years of life stuck at home, as our old age keeps us from exploring the beauty of nature that awaits outside and will be waiting for a very long time. Is this because of the public opinion that we must join the machine to avoid the shame of being lazy? Or does the true shame lie within, and the expectations and pressures emerge from our minds? Henry David Thoreau says in his essay Economy, “ Public opinion is a weak tyrant compared with our own private opinion.” Now, in this day and age, as humankind continuously improves on the machine to lower costs and pump out products more efficiently, we have become dependent of that very machine. I believe there is a certain desperation within every human being that may either lead them to that dependency on a machine that now rules the world, or the desperation may push us deep into the woods to hide from the machine in a life of isolation. So what does Thoreau want us to take from this? Do we run and hide, fight, or simply sit back and let the machine take over the world until compassion and emotion have become a thing of the past and we can not tell human from machine.
