In the book Into the Wild Jon Krakauer said ” Then, in a gesture that would have done both Thoreau and Tolstoy proud, he arranged all his paper currency in a pile on the sand-a pathetic little stack of ones and fives and twenties-and put a match to it.”
Thoreau would be proud because, transcedentalists don’t need money, and McCandless is getting rid of his money and moving away from society.
Thoreau would be disgusted with people basing how wealthy they are on what possessions they own, and not based on what possessions they can live without. “What is a house but a sedes, a seat?” that quote is saying that wealth should be based on what you can live without, instead of what you are living with now.
I feel the most at peace at my house, in my room laying on my bed listening to music or playing Madden.
I think reading this book on this website will be kind of difficult, because the website is pretty new and the book was written over 100 years ago so our vocabulary has changed a bit over the past century.
