Thoreau’s resistance to injustice is based on his radical spirituality because he believed that the individual had the power and responsibility to resist injustice and fight for what was right. He believed that true change could only come from within and that individuals must cultivate their own inner strength and moral compass to effect change in the world around them. He also believed that if you confine a man under government rules, tie him to his occupation, and consume his time with materialistic pursuits while holding him back from direct relations to nature, you no longer have a conscience man. You could even argue that Thoreau saw being out in nature as ‘church’ and that you are not connected with the divine if you don’t go to church.
