After reading the chapters in Thoreau it is clear that he thinks spending copious amounts of money to attend a university is not the wisest idea. However I do not think that he views education as unimportant. Thoreau emphasizes learning about various subjects through being hands on sand gaining experience rather than sitting in a classroom. He believes you should go out on your own and learn rather than depending on teachers and other people.
To some extent I agree with him. I believe if you rely on the university to obtain all your knowledge you will not gain a well rounded education. You must be willing to learn on your own and open yourself to many different kinds of knowledge. To Thoreau reading is very important which I also agree is the base of education. By reading you open your mind up and free yourself to interpret books many different ways. I do not agree with Thoreau with the idea that a degree from a university is not important, however I do agree with the fact that you have to be open minded about knowledge and education.
