Thoreau states this quote in chapter 8 “Not till we are lost, in other words not till we have lost the world, do we begin to find ourselves, and realize where we are and the infinite extent of our relations.” McCandless would completely agree with this statement by Thoreau. McCandless’s journey across the country is completely lose himself in the nature and pure experiences. In a way McCandless lives by this quote, we know by what we’ve read so far that he never wishes to know where he is. He only wishes to be lost and more greatly find himself in the process.

Setting. Setting is a time and place in which a story takes place. Thoreau uses setting to describe everything that goes on around him. He’s very big on making his surroundings know and detailed to the reader. With out setting the reader wouldn’t be able to really tell how isolated Thoreau is, which is a key part in the point he tries to get across.

“We must learn to reawaken and keep ourselves awake, not by mechanical aids, but by an infinite expectation of the dawn, which does not forsake us in our soundest sleep”. People in today’s society go through the motions of live just trying to get by. Little do we ever try to simplify or concentrate on on the little things let alone just being alive in a moment. Thoreau’s way of thinking goes against all our basic ways of going about life these days. If we don’t have mechanical aids to get up like a phone, an alarm, even other people, to get up for a job we hate we really have no reason. Thoreau was one who believed to be awake for something that you love. Something that makes you whole when you do it. If Thoreau were to be alive in today’s society he would pity us for we all get up for jobs we hate, people we must impress but do not like, our needs for the newest technology to add one more thing to the list of responsibilities that we don’t need to be responsible for.

My Walden would have to be this clearing at my old house in Byron-Bergen. You take this trail at the edge of the forest and follow it for a couple hundred feet. It opens up to this huge clearing surrounded by trees in every direction. I believe there were about 3 main climbing trees that being a kid I was obsessed with climbing all the way up to the top. You could look up and the light would be split up in all different directions. When ever it rained, the trees blocked it just enough that it would never touch where you stood. This place was my serenity. This was my Walden.

This will most likely will start off slow and troublesome. With time as we progress with the activity we shall learn how to use the website, hence forth we will be able to learn the material we’re intended to learn. Hopefully it will be a fun learning experience but other wise it’s probably going to be like school which is quite dis interesting.
