Bre BinnsParticipantIn The Village, Thoreau states “I was put into jail, because as I have elsewhere related, I did not pay a tax to, or recognize the authority of the State which buys and sells men, women and children, like cattle, at the door of its senate house. I had gone down to the woods for other purposes. But wherever a man goes, men will persue and paw him with their dirty institutions, and, if they can, constrain him to belong to their desperate odd-fellow society.” I believe that Chris McCandless would enjoy this quote from Walden because of his beliefs and views on government and society and how they have “stupid rules” and they are more controlling than they should be, and together they both believe it is in one’s best interest to break free from society and the rules of the government and to live down your own path; to make your own rules and to live your way.

Bre BinnsParticipantThe literary element I chose in class was setting. Setting is probably the most important factor in Walden, due to Thoreau’s relationship with nature, the setting of this book, and how much it means to him and his life. In fact, nature is his life. All he wants in life is to connect and be one with nature. He references wanting to be one with the birds, meaning he wishes he could fly anywhere and be free, and be a part of them. Nature is so important to him, he gives it personification and gives it female like characteristics and calls it “her.”

Bre BinnsParticipantI think that Thoreau today would be disgusted and horrified at society’s way of life and how people act. People in today’s world are more concerned with other people than they are with themselves, they are always in other people’s business when they shouldn’t be, and in some cases people will do anything to ruin someone or to put them down. It is almost like today’s society only strives for attention from everyone else, and all that matters is what’s happening around them, and everyone is always engulfed in their technology which takes value away from simplicity. Nothing is simple anymore, and everything has become more complicated than it should be. In Walden, Thoreau states “Why should we live with such hurry and waste of life? We are determined to be starved before we are hungry.” By this, he means everyone should slow down and focus on the well-being of ourselves instead of constantly trying to feed into everyone else’s life.

Bre BinnsParticipantMy Walden is being outside at my house riding my four wheeler. Living on a farm is the lifestyle I would never trade. I love being able to clear my head, hop on my four wheeler and just ride for however long I want, to wherever I want. Through the cornfields, the woods… It always makes me feel most at peace with myself.

Bre BinnsParticipantI think it will be beneficial because we can explore new ways to learn with technology but it may also be annoying to figure out and get used to.
