Thoreau has a fascinating view of religion and his use of the Bible. He quotes it on many occasions, yet never once cites it as the Bible, but instead uses abstract words like “as it says in an old book.” Ironically, he cites it rather often for a man who is not a Christian, especially for one who avoids using the book title. Many liken Thoreau to James, who says to humble yourself, and God will lift you up, in a sense that because he left the city behind and therefore has humbled himself. At the same time, he decides to liken himself to the gods of Olympus and the Earth and calls the land he lives on similar to the lands of Olympus, in </span><i><span style=”font-weight: 400;”>Where I Lived, and What I Lived For</span></i><span style=”font-weight: 400;”>.</span>
