Conflict: An internal or external resistance faced by the protagonist.
Conflict plays a big role in the novel. The protagonist (In this case Henry David Thoreau) faces the conflict of society relying to much on technology and possessions rather than realizing that you don’t need those possessions they aren’t a necessity they are just what you think you need when you only want them. They are not critical to your survival. So Thoreau faced this conflict with his experiment only taking his necessities and leaving everything else behind.
I think thoreau would be upset with today’s society although he may like a few of the things we have done to preserve nature like setting up state parks and protecting wildlife in areas where they are endangered and reintroducing them into areas where they have gone extinct. I do not think that he would like how much everyone relies on the use of electronics using cell phones instead of actually talking face to face with people and instead of getting out and doing something they would rather sit and watch T.V. or play video games then go on a run or go to a friends house. “We must learn to reawaken and keep ourselves awake, not by mechanical aids, but by an infinite expectation of the dawn.” Paragraph 14 agrees with what I’m saying.
I feel this way in my tree stand. Early in the morning when its quiet, there’s no one out, I’m alone and warm in layers of clothing. That’s where I’m at peace.
