Emma McMahonParticipantIn Chris McCandless’s journal, he has faced exhaustion and a deprivation of food. Nevertheless he still gets excited to continue on in his journey. In the book it states “He had not seen or talked to another soul in thirty-six days.” Thoreau would appreciate this because Thoreau did the same thing as Chris McCandless. Thoreau went out into the woods and didn’t have any contact with the real world or any people for that matter. Thoreau would appreciate what Chris has done. Another thing from “Into the Wild” was “It is the experiences, the memories, the great triumphant joy of living to the fullest extent in which real meaning is found.” This relates with transcendentalist thoughts. Thoreau would also appreciate this because he was a transcendentalist and found great meaning in life through being alone and living life to the fullest with only the things he truly needed. Chris and Thoreau both share similar thoughts in how they believe they should live life and how get everything that matters out of life.

Emma McMahonParticipantI think that trying to read an old text with modern technology will be an interesting experience. It has it’s flaws but seems to be working ok. Technology is confusing and difficult sometimes.

Emma McMahonParticipantThoreau in today’s world would not enjoy life. He would feel out of place. Today, people are very attached to things, such as technology. People now a days can’t be without something for more than a few minutes. Like an overly attached girlfriend. Thoreau likes to be as simple as possible and have as little things as humanly possible. He talked about how he disliked trains and how we had to rely on them. Now in society, we have cars and phones and tvs. We rely a lot on these things and Thoreau would not enjoy present day life.

Emma McMahonParticipantOne of the literary elements in Walden was conflict. Conflict is an internal or external resistance faced by the main character. The conflict Thoreau faces in the book is between him and society. He struggles to be alright with society and it’s ways. He does not like how materialistic people have become and he wishes that people had less stuff. He also didn’t like the pace of life and how people take things so quickly. He believes everything in life should be slowed down. Industrialization like railroads also bothered Thoreau because people are too attached to things and should become more simplistic.

Emma McMahonParticipantI feel most at peace when I’m traveling. I love to travel and find new and exciting things. I like going to different countries and traveling because things are so different. I feel I’m more content when I have the chance to do different and exciting things in new places.
