Hali DaceyParticipantThoreau writes “Not till we are lost, in other words not till we have lost the world, do we begin to find ourselves and realize where we are and the infinite extent of our relations.” Chris Would like and relate to this quote because he goes on this journey to find himself. Chris gets lost several times on his journey, like in the canal, but it never stops him. It just helps him figure out who he is, and even though he gets lost, he is still successful in the end. He would like this quote because he likes to do everything for himself, and losing the world throughout his journey not only helps him learn how to do things himself, but he finds himself along the way.

Hali DaceyParticipantTone is the authors point of view on the subject. Thoreau said “As I have said, I do not propose to write an ode to dejection, but to brag as lustily as a chanticleer in the morning, standing on his roost, if only to wake my neighbors up.” This is important because this quote tells us exactly what Thoreau’s point of view is. He is just trying to wake us up to the reality that we have no simplicity. He is telling us to try and live simply and take in the beauty of the world, just like he does. He’t not trying to complain, he is just informing.

Hali DaceyParticipantIf Thoreau were alive today to see what modern day society is like, he would be appalled. Today, we live off of our technology, and we let life pass us by. We look forward to the weekend, to a holiday, to our next birthday, and we don’t live all the days in between. Thoreau writes, “Why should we live with such hurry and waste of life?” This leads me to believe that he would be disgusted by our rush to get through things. Also, nowadays we depend on technology, and we never get away from it long enough to embrace the beauty of nature. Yes, we can go to state parks such as Letchworth, Allegany, or even the Adirondack Mountains to “find ourselves”, but eventually we will return to our normal lives with technology as the center of everything.

Hali DaceyParticipantI feel most content whenever I am outside in the fall. I find peace in the trees when they are changing color and how pretty fall is. Also, being outside in the fall is peaceful because of the breeze and all the sounds of nature.

Hali DaceyParticipantI think that the experience of reading Walden will be beneficial. I think this because this book gives us a little bit of an intro into transcendentalism, and help the us understand Into the Wild better than we would if we don’t read Walden. But the technology we are using may cause issues, because maybe not everyone will understand how to use it.
