Jake HIlyardParticipantIn chapter 8 of “Walden ” by Henry David Thoreau, he states that “Not till we are lost, in other words not till we have lost the world, do we begin to find ourselves, and realize where we are and the infinite extent of our relations.” This quote would fit Chris McCandless’ life directly. When Chris left his home , college, and family he wanted to have what Thoreau had. He wanted to be alone and drift from the world, so he could find out in life what he really wanted. When you remove the things that are in your life you start to find out the specific things that you want to continue, and the things that don’t mean that much to you even though you once thought of that thing as important. It is easy to take for granted the things that you have always had, but once they are gone you truly learn the meaning of what is important and unimportant in your life.

Jake HIlyardParticipant- The most important literary element in the novel “Walden” is Conflict. conflict is discussed because Thorough lived in nature because he was anti technology. Thorough is the Protagonist, While Tech. is the Antagonist. Thorough proves his point by going to live in the woods without out any technology.

Jake HIlyardParticipantif Thoreau was alive today he would not like our technologically advanced world. We also form our lives around materialist objects that he would think would not be necessary. Another idea that would upset him is the idea that people settle down with a wife and kids and don’t do anything with our lives as we expect to be happy for our kids and there accomplishments. a quote that describes this is “I found myself neighbor to the birds; not by having imprisoned one, but having caged myself near them”. this means that people need to live freely everyday and not know what to expect, to live on our own means and not let others stop us from living a days whim and being happy.

Jake HIlyardParticipantReading Walden will be good thing for the class, it teach’s us the benefits of Transcendentalism. The topic could become boring depending on how the lesson is taught.
