Kimberly LubanskiParticipantIn the novel, Into The Wild by Jon Krakauer, the main character Chris McCandless “arranged all his paper currency into a pile on the sand – a pathetic little stack of ones and fives and twenties – and put a match to it.” Thoreau would greatly appreciate McCandless doing this. This is something Thoreau himself would’ve done to prove that money was just a worthless piece of paper and it has no meaning. It shows a great view that transcendentalists have, which is protesting against the general state of spirituality and intellect.

Kimberly LubanskiParticipantAn important literary element used in Thoreau’s novel Walden would be conflict. Conflict is an argument between the protagonist and antagonist. In this novel, Thoreau is the protagonist and society is the antagonist, or man vs society. Thoreau deliberately left his town to go live in the woods to prove he does not need material things to get by. He wants to keep his life simple and not complicate it by adding unnecessary things.

Kimberly LubanskiParticipantIf Henry David Thoreau was still alive today, he would be disgusted with society and what it has come to. The whole purpose of him going off and living in the woods was so that he could separate himself from all the finer things in life, things like money that make you greedy. “I want to live deliberately to front only the essential facts of life, and see if i could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when i came to die, discover that i had not lived,” wrote Thoreau in his novel Walden, this means he wants to see what it is like to live without the things we’ve come to take for granted. He wants to live with only the basic essentials that you need to survive, and society today is not based on that. That is why if Thoreau was still live today, he would not be please with what our society has come to.

Kimberly LubanskiParticipantMy Walden would be at a swimming pool, whether for club or high school. It would be there not because I’m alone, but because it gives me a different kind of feeling. I’m surrounded by people who have the same passion and hatred for the sport as I do. I’m someplace where I’m surrounded by peers, but do everything alone. The music, the talking, and the ability to allow your mind to only focus on swimming is a great thing to experience, that’s why my Walden would be at a swimming pool.

Kimberly LubanskiParticipantBeing able to use the technology along with reading the book will be more beneficial than not. It will be helpful because the book itself was written long ago, making it more difficult to read, but being able to see what others are saying about the book and being able to have the students interact with one another while reading the book will be helpful. If you’re confused about something, coming here might be able to clear things up for you.
