ParticipantIn chapter 8, The Village, Thoreau says, “Not till we are lost, in other words not till we have lost the world, do we begin to find ourselves, and realize where we are and the infinite extent of our relations.” That is what Chris McCandless wanted to do, he wanted to move away from this world and have his own, opening his mind and trying to understand why was he in the world. Leaving aside all his studies, his family, his friends, his money, his properties and belongings… for discover what did he really want.

ParticipantThe tone is how the author feels while he is telling the story.
It’s role in the book is very important because we need to know how is he feeling or what does he think about what is happening, this can help us to understand a bit his point of view.
It plays a very important role in Thoreau’s message because he is telling us why is he living in the woods. To keep away from the materialism of the society (he is negative, disdainful), and to discover what can the nature teach him (he is being positive).

ParticipantHe definitely would hate the world today. Now a days we are surrounded by technology and it seems like we can’t live without it. All the teenagers are always on their phones and personally I think if someone took our phones we wouldn’t know what to do in some of our free time, or how to talk or hang out with friends. We are becoming dependent on thechnological devices. Thoreau went to the woods because he wanted to live freely, to keep away from the “ills of society”, and its important to learn what nature could teach him and being self-sufficcient before he could discover that he had not lived.

ParticipantI’m from Spain and where i live now it’s completely different than my house there. In Spain i live in a neighborhood, especially in a flat so i have neighbors upstairs and downstairs and sometimes this can be a bit annoying, and we don’t have this fields and all this natural space. But here i don’t have very close neighbors, so the place is quiet and peaceful. I’m surrounded by dogs, cats, and also caws but i like it, so I feel good and comfortable here.

ParticipantI think it’s going to be enjoyable and beneficial because we are gonna read a very old book online so we can read it whenever and wherever we want.
The only thing i don’t like it’s reading books on the computer i prefer reading them on paper, but the comments by Walter Harding that you can read in the online version can be very good and helpful.
