In The Village, Thoreau stays, “Not till we are lost, in other words not till we have lost the world, do we begin to find ourselves, and realize where we are and the infinite extent of our relations.” This quote would reach out to McCandless because it would show him and give him more reason to go out in the middle of no where by himself to find himself. It kind of reassures his reasoning for doing that in the first place.
If Thorough were alive today, he would be very disappointed with today’s society. Thorough was a very down to earth person, and most people today are constantly on their smart phones and doing something technological. We ignore the world around us, where Thorough took in everything that he saw. We are always waiting for the newest “thing” or the latest iphone. Thorough didn’t wait for anything. He took his life day by day and just accepted life the way it was. If he didn’t have something, he didn’t need it. Simple as that.
Conflict- an internal or external resistance faced by the protagonist.
In the book, there aren’t really any other characters in the book, so most of the time Thorough is having a conflict with himself, or society. This plays an important role in his message to the audience, because this is the reason why Thorough went into the woods in the first place. He wanted to escape society.
I feel completely at peace when I have food, my best friend, and music. Where we are doesn’t really matter because I have all I need to be happy right with me.
I think that this activity will be fairly painful and slow at first, but once we get the hang of it, it might be easier and less painful.
