How To Read This Text
¶ 1 Leave a comment on paragraph 1 1 To open a chapter in Walden, press the chapter title at left. Longer chapters (for example, “Economy”) have been divided into two or more pages. Pressing the title for these chapters will reveal the subsidiary page titles, which also indicate the paragraphs comprised by each page.
¶ 2 Leave a comment on paragraph 2 1 The menus to the right of each page will show you what other readers have been saying about Walden. Between the “Comments” and “Activity” views, you can choose to display the comments on a paragraph, a page, or the whole text. In “Activity,” you can switch between viewing all comments and just those of your friends in The Readers’ Thoreau. You can also toggle between comments from friends or all readers across all the texts you’re reading here.
¶ 3 Leave a comment on paragraph 3 1 “Comments” will show you comments on the page broken out by paragraph as well as global comments on the page as a whole. In “Comments” you can also narrow or expand the comments you see by group. Press “Filter Comments by Group” to bring up a list of all public groups and groups to which you belong. Unchecking the box beside a group will screen out the comments from that group.
¶ 4 Leave a comment on paragraph 4 1 There are several ways to leave a comment on a paragraph. You can press the paragraph itself or the speech bubble at the paragraph’s upper right corner; either action will bring up a text box where you can begin typing. Alternatively, if you begin by selecting some text in the paragraph with your cursor, you’ll get an option to “quote and comment”; your selected text will be highlighted in the body text and dropped automatically into the top of your comment box. Before you hit “Submit Comment,” use the dropdown just above the submit button to choose which group you’d like your comment to appear in, and consider tagging your comment so that other readers can find it based on the topics to which it’s relevant.
